Is sourcing from India now cheaper, landed?

The UK–India trade agreement came into force on 15 July 2026 and removed UK duty on most goods from India. Compare the full landed cost of one product line from your current source and from India: product price, freight, insurance, duty, clearance and the cost of the stock sitting in the pipeline.

The product line
Bank Rate is 3.75% (held on 17 September 2026). Most businesses borrow a few points above it; we start at 7%.

How it works

The sums, in plain sight.

Freight per unit = freight per container / units per container. Insurance is a share of product price plus freight. UK duty is charged on the customs value, which is product price plus freight and insurance to the UK border.

Landed cost adds clearance, port charges and haulage, and the cost of funding the stock while it is on order and in transit: landed cost x lead time in weeks / 52 x your cost of funds. Import VAT is left out because most businesses recover it.

This compares cost only. Minimum order quantities, quality, supplier capability, currency risk and the safety stock a longer or less reliable lead time needs can all outweigh a small price difference.
