Where does your supply chain carbon sit?

For most businesses, the largest share of emissions sits in what they buy, not what they burn. Enter your yearly spend by category, straight from your purchase ledger, and see a first estimate of your Scope 3 footprint and where it is concentrated. No carbon data is needed to start.

Your spend

Up to twelve categories, from your purchase ledger. The example figures are illustrative.

The factors are in 2023 prices. If you enter the price rises on what you buy since 2023, spend is scaled back to 2023 prices first; leave at 0 for a cautious, slightly higher estimate.

How it works

The sums, in plain sight.

Emissions = spend, excluding VAT, x the UK Government multiplier for that category, in kg CO2e per £. The multipliers come from Defra’s spend-based emissions factors for 2023, the latest year published, which cover the full supply chain behind each £ spent in the UK economy.

Spend-based estimates are the standard way to start on Scope 3 under the GHG Protocol, but they are averages: a supplier who has cut its emissions looks the same as one who has not. Use them to find where to look, then replace the largest categories with supplier data.

Wholesale has been left out on purpose: its published multiplier looks unreliable at this level. Choose the category of the goods themselves instead.
